The new season is proving so troublesome for me. I have had to alter all the leagues, incorporate North 2 East into my scheme, the University of Central Lancashire caused the whole process to fall over last week, or at least the length of their name did. Could anything else go wrong? Well I am now told that the North 2 Lancs league will play each other three times. Lots to do so little time to do it in.
What is the point of this moan. Am I troubled with overwork? Certainly not. Am I attempting to make excuses for the state of the league tables last weekend? No. Most of the work is done and I can sit back to my usual easy time of 'typing' in results, once the North 2 Lancs league is sorted. My point is that the administration of the game needs more effort. If you have any spare time then go and speak with your Chairman, President or any team captain they all need help. Why not ask? I know at Rochdale the answer will be very positive.
What about the rugby? The first team started their league campaign in the required manner. A home game and victory over newly promoted Horden was just what the Doctor ordered. It was a competent performance. Horden had a good well drilled pack who dominated the set pieces but they were little match for Rochdale once the ball required moving. They will certainly be a side capable of winning once the heavier pitches of the Northern winters hit us. Rochdale need to improve if they are to compete near the top of the league but today they showed that they are capable of so much more.
The second team lost and need to get back to winning ways soon. It is difficult to win at Preston Grasshoppers. The result is still a disappointment and the players need to work hard on their game to improve.
The third team continue to impress. Their form in the two games so far has been good. Their fitness belies their inability/unwillingness to train. Any of this team could play for higher teams if only they would spend an hour or two each week working on their game. Heaton Moor were good opponents who could have won the match. The thirds showed their grit in hanging onto a hard fought victory, if they carry on like this then they should be more competitive this season.
I repeat last weeks question as there were few respondents last week and nobody quite got it correct! Paul Swindon gets a mention for the best answer, but he failed to tell me the current name of the trophy and the dates that Parker was included in the name. He was not far away but we have to be fair (and he has won far to often and deserves the rough treatment).
Lady Penelope's driver's name (Parker) was used in a major rugby cup name. Which cup and in which years? And to get it correct I want the name of the competition as it was then AND as it is now AND the date (range) that Parker was included in the name (except for Stuart who must also tell me Lady Penelope's full name and Parker's date of birth).
I am expecting answers along the lines of "The xxx was known as zzzz from yyyy to yyyy".
Answers and anything else you want to bring to my notice should be e-mailed to quiz@rrufc.org as usual. See you next week.
